Nina Warhurst admitted she was in tears as she said farewell to BBC Breakfast. The journalist presented her last ever segment on the show yesterday, and couldn’t help getting emotional at the end of an era. TV star Nina, 44, had a long stint on BBC Breakfast, first joining the show in 2018, and then succeeding Steph McGovern and the Money and Work reporter in 2020.

Even before then she was part of the BBC family. She started working for the broadcaster in 2010, and prior to her news roles acted in BBC shows, with a memorable part in the 1997 Christmas episode of Casualty. Nina won’t be leaving the BBC completely – with a job set up to present the BBC One O’Clock News – but it didn’t make saying goodbye to her Breakfast team any easier.

Her co-star Jon Kay shared a tribute to Nina on Instagram after her final morning show, sharing a selection of photos of Nina both in and out of the studio, set to Ed Sheeran’s song Nina.

Alongside the snaps, he wrote: “This was definitely NOT goodbye – but today was Nina’s last shift doing the Money & Work job on Breakfast before she starts her new role presenting the BBC One O’Clock News.

“She’ll still be based in Salford – still working with the same team in the same studio. She’ll still be presenting Breakfast with us sometimes. And she’ll always be a mate.”

Jon added: “But I just wanted to say what a pleasure it has been to work with her since I joined Brekkie. She’s one of the most talented, dedicated, versatile, fun and fearless people I know. She commits 100% to any story or issue she’s covering. She always puts the audience first. And she’s exactly the same off-air as she is on the sofa.

“Much as we’ll miss her energy and smiles at 0445, we’re all delighted for her that she can now have a little more sleep – and a bit more time at home with her wonderful family in the mornings. She’ll be amazing at lunchtime x.”

Nina quickly responded to Jon’s post, revealing she was in tears at his touching words. “@jon you made me cry !! Thank you so much xxx,” she wrote, jokingly adding about his song choice: “And so kind of @teddysphotos to find the time to write a song to mark this historic day.”

Jon made it clear that Nina still wouldn’t be far from the breakfast team, as she remains in her home city of Manchester for her new role.

When Nina announced her move on X, formerly known as Twitter, she shared: “Hanging up the high-vis & hairnet as I join the BBC’s News at One.

“Our London team built a gem of a programme & it’s a privilege to be on the Salford team taking it forward. The teenage me who lived half a mile from here & dreamed of journalism would NOT believe it.”
