Prince Harry declined the invitation to his close friend the Duke of Westminster’s wedding after learning of Prince William’s prominent role in the ceremony, according to a source.

Prince Harry felt “put out” that William was offered a prominent role in the marriage of his close friend the Duke of Westminster, leading him to decline the invitation, a source has claimed.

Hugh Grosvenor and his fiancée Olivia Henson are set to tie the knot in what’s expected to be a star-studded ceremony at Chester Cathedral on 7 June.

Grosvenor is a close friend of both the Princes and is godfather to Prince William’s son George, and Harry’s son Archie.

Details about the ceremony have been closely guarded, but the Prince of Wales is reportedly set to be an usher, reflecting their long and close friendship.

But sources told the Mail on Sunday that Harry was “put out” by the decision to hand his brother a key role, having always seen himself as being closer to Grosvenor.

“William was asked to have a prominent role in the wedding and that’s what triggered Harry to decline an invitation,” the source claimed. “Apparently he [Harry] was put out by the request when he thought it should have been him.”

Addressing the lack of public information about the event, the source said: “Both the Palace and Hugh’s people decided to hold dear the operational part of the wedding once the leak about Harry not attending made the papers.”

It was claimed last year that the Duke of Sussex had been “snubbed” from the event, though a source close to Meghan and Harry insisted to US publication Page Six that the pair had been invited but jointly opted to decline..

Hugh Grosvenor was named the UK’s wealthiest person under 40 for the second year in a row in the Sunday Times Rich List last week and is the son of Gerald Grosvenor, who died in 2016 when Hugh was 15 years old.

Speaking to the Chester Standard, the Duke said he chose the Cathedral to host the big day due to its deep connections with his family.

“We’ve obviously got a long association with the cathedral as a family so we were here for my father’s memorial, my sister’s wedding and every Remembrance Sunday that I can attend is here,” he said.

“But I’m unbelievably excited and I also wanted to make it very clear how unbelievably helpful people have been, how supportive they’ve been so far, which I’m unbelievably grateful for because I do realise that it’s going to be a big, big thing for the city.

“It’s going to be certainly a huge thing for us and we’re grateful for all the help really.”
