ANDY Reid kept things simple when giving Travis Kelce advice about his retirement decision.
Kelce contemplated retiring from the NFL following the Kansas City Chiefs‘ brutal Super Bowl loss.
Soon after the Chiefs lost in the Super Bowl, Kelce detailed the “wear and tear” his body was facing after 12 years in the league.
“The fact that we keep going to these AFC Championships and these Super Bowls, that means I’m playing an extra three games than everybody else in the entire league,” he said.
“That’s a lot of wear and tear on your body and it’s a lot of time spent in the building, focusing on your craft, focusing on the task at hand, every challenge that you set up for yourself. That process can be grueling, it can weigh on you.”
Reid is aware of how hard Kelce has worked during his time in the NFL, and had a simple message for him.
“Get out of town and relax,” is what Reid said he told Kelce.
Reid insisted that he doesn’t know what Kelce will decide about his retirement while at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
“That’s up to Travis,” he said.
“At this point, get out of town and relax. That’s my motto for these guys.
“They played a lot of games for a consistent amount of seasons here.
“So you get to the end and you’ve exhausted yourself mentally and physically… step back and take care of that, then we’ll talk
“But for right now, I think that’s what he’s doing.”
Reid and Kelce conducted a regular exit interview before Kelce went on vacation, but he said he will meet with his tight end again this offseason,
“He and I will get together,” Reid said.
“I had exit meetings with all the guys before they left, so we did have the chance to talk already.”
While Reid is unsure of Kelce’s decision, the Chiefs’ general manager Brett Veach says the tight end is coming back.
According to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, Veach said Kelce is “fired up” to return to the team.
“We left it as, he’d be back and we’re excited to get him back and get him going,” Veach said.
Kelce has one year left on his contract with the Chiefs before he is officially a free agent.
It is possible that he could retire when his contract expires with the team.
However, Kelce has yet to make any official statement about his status for the 2025 season.
