Minnesota Vikings co-owner Mark Wilf strongly indicated that his team could be eyeing a quarterback with one of their first-round picks in next month’s 2024 NFL Draft.

The Minnesota Vikings lost their starting quarterback of the last six years, Kirk Cousins, to the Atlanta Falcons in free agency. As a short-term solution, they signed former first-round pick Sam Darnold to a one-year contract.

Minnesota owns the No. 11 and No. 23 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, having acquired the latter in a trade with the Houston Texans in exchange for two second-rounders and a 2024 sixth-round draft choice.

Speaking to Steve Wyche and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Wilf hinted at the Vikings potentially making a big move to land a quarterback.
“When it comes to the quarterbacks position, it’s certainly critical. (GM) Kwesi (Adofo-Mensah) and coach (Kevin) O’Connell are working hard. We’ve got a plan, and Sam Darnold’s part of it…We’re excited we have two first-round picks….We have a lot of flexibility, and we’ll see what happens.”

The Chicago Bears will use the first overall pick on USC’s Caleb Williams, barring any giant surprises. With the No. 2 pick, the Washington Commanders will presumably choose between J.J. McCarthy, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye.

The New England Patriots are also expected to take a QB with the No. 3 pick. If that’s how the top three plays out, then the Minnesota Vikings may have to trade up into the top-five to get the quarterback they want.

Minnesota Vikings Are A Team To Watch In J.J. McCarthy Chase

Over the past few weeks, speculation has ramped up about the Minnesota Vikings heavily pursuing the national championship-winning quarterback. The acquisition of a second first-round pick from Houston certainly puts Minny in position to move up for their man.

McCarthy would be entering a good situation if he landed with the Minnesota Vikings. He’d be joining an offense led by the league’s best wide receiver in Justin Jefferson, rising star WR Jordan Addison and Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson.

If McCarthy isn’t NFL-ready, the Vikings can comfortably start the aforementioned Sam Darnold for a year before handing the keys over to the Michigan product.
