Baker Mayfield’s football life was on life support after the former No. 1 overall pick had left Cleveland and got benched in Carolina.

When he signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Buccaneers in March to succeed Tom Brady, it was make or break season for him. He delivered.

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers plan on rewarding him as they have had “preliminary talks” with QB Baker Mayfield about a contract extension.

Stroud noted Mayfield’s representation is expected to meet with GM Jason Licht next week at the NFL Combine and there is mutual interest in an extension that could lead to a long-term deal and big money.

Stroud writes Mayfield prefers to stay in Tampa Bay because it gives him the best chance to win. However, a team like the New England Patriots has been reported as a possible suitor for the quarterback.

Mayfield made the most of a one-year prove-it deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, leading the team to a 9-8 record and a playoff run that saw the team defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round.

The signal-caller successfully revived his career with a season consisting of a personal-best 4,044 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, while throwing 10 interceptions.

The cherry on top was Mayfield being named offensive MVP of the Pro Bowl games as he won the precision passing competition and showed out during flag football.

Now, his bank account is going to be blessed as a result.
