Some NFL teams reportedly believe that Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Joe Milton III will switch to a completely different position down the road.
Joe Milton is one of the more polarizing prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft. The 24-year-old had a phenomenal final college season in 2023, completing 64.7 percent of his pass attempts for 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions along with 299 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
Listed at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, Milton certainly has the size, speed and athleticism to be a star in the NFL. But interestingly, Dane Brugler of The Athletic reports that some teams think Milton will eventually switch to the tight end position as a pro:
“Overall, Milton has the physical tools that scream first-round pick, but his passing instincts and ability to read the field are undeveloped. He is a project quarterback prospect, and some teams believe he will eventually transition to tight end in the NFL (similar path as Logan Thomas).”

Logan Thomas had a productive stint as quarterback of Virginia Tech, and the Arizona Cardinals even drafted him in the fourth round (120th overall) in 2014. After bouncing around several NFL clubs’ practice squads, Thomas decided to make the change to tight end.

Thomas’ best season to date came in 2020 as a member of Washington, when he caught 72 passes for 670 yards and six touchdowns. Will Joe Milton follow Thomas’ footsteps and make the switch to tight end? Only time will tell.
Joe Milton Is A Fascinating Prospect
The hype on Milton certainly isn’t as high as top QB prospects like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr.
But Milton is still an intriguing quarterback prospect that should draw plenty of interest in the mid rounds of the draft. Remember, Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy weren’t exactly considered elite QB prospects, and we’ve seen how both turned out.
Milton deserves a chance at quarterback in the NFL, even if he has to be a second or third-stringer. If that doesn’t work cut, then he can go the Thomas or Taysom Hill route and make the switch to tight end.
