For the upcoming 2024 season, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will not be in the league coaching any team, but that does not mean he is heading off into retirement.

ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr., Seth Wickersham, and Jeremy Fowler are reporting this week that although Bill Belichick was widely ignored by several teams during this year’s head coaching carousel, there are still three teams that the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach would love to coach in the future.

“He is believed to be biding his time until next January for openings on teams he has told confidants he would be interested in coaching: the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants,” ESPN wrote.

The Eagles and Cowboys reportedly already considered bringing in Bill Belichick this offseason. Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman are both “fans” of Belichick and believe he still “has his fastball.”

Despite how they felt, the team was hesitant to part ways with Nick Sirianni and replace him with a coach who might only be there for a short period. Belichick is 72 years old.

“You’ll have to start over again,” a source said of the Eagles’ thought process. “Who would replace him? He hasn’t had a good record of developing coaches. They were afraid that he’ll have changed everything and every person, and [then] you’ll be starting from scratch again. He didn’t demand those changes, but they felt like, if we hire him, we have to give everything to him and trust how he does it.”

The assumption after the Dallas Cowboys season came to an end was that owner Jerry Jones would fire head coach Mike McCarthy but he “quickly” decided to stick with him for at least one more season. He is in the final year of his deal.

Dallas has long felt like a natural fit for Bill Belichick, but if the Eagles falter next season, that could lead to a bidding war for his services.

The Giants are less likely to get him given their lack of playoff-caliber talent on the roster.

The New England Patriots and Belichick mutually agreed to part ways, concluding his 24-year tenure as head coach of the Patriots after a terrible 2023 season.

Belichick won six Super Bowls but the team found little to no success once Tom Brady left in 2020 and immediately won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Multiple losing seasons and striking out on talent at the QB position eventually led to his departure.
