King Charles is thought to have invited Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the Royal Family’s annual getaway to Balmoral but they would be forced to ‘swallow their pride’, claims a royal expert

Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle will find themselves “in a very difficult position” over King Charles’ invitation to spend time with the Royal Family at Balmoral, a royal expert claims.

Over the summer holidays the Royal Family head off on their traditional holiday to Balmoral. It’s been suggested that King Charles will invite Harry and Meghan to the Scottish Highlands retreat this year as it is customary for the monarch to welcome family members to stay at various points over the break.

For Harry, holidaying in Balmoral over the summer was part of his royal childhood and he was at the estate in August 1997 when he heard the tragic news that his mother Princess Diana had died following a car crash in Paris. But during her time as a working royal, Meghan only managed one trip to Balmoral – in 2018 with the Queen just months after she and Harry tied the knot.

And now royal expert and author Tom Quinn tells us that an invitation to the getaway could be “difficult” for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “If the invitation becomes a real invitation – and it is almost certainly to do that – both Harry and Meghan will find themselves in a very difficult position,” Quinn tells us.

“They are obsessed with their public image and will be aware that it will look really good if they swallow their pride and came back to the UK,” Quinn adds. “But Meghan still wants that apology from William and King Charles and Kate so it’s going to be difficult for her to swallow her pride, but on the other hand she won’t want to appear to be holding a grudge because that will lead to criticism and she really hates criticism. On the other hand, she knows she always has the children’s needs to fall back on when she makes her apologies and says she can’t come to Balmoral.”

It is thought King Charles has extended an olive branch to his youngest son and his wife by ‘hinting’ they should visit Balmoral this summer. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, royal expert Tom Quinn claims the monarch offered to have the couple at the royal residence to try and resolve tensions within the royal family, namely with Prince William and Princess Kate. Quinn explained: “According to people I’ve spoken to at Kensington Palace King Charles has hinted to Harry and Meghan that they should come to Balmoral in the summer to see if something can be done about the ongoing feud in the family.

“Charles knows that Harry and Meghan are much more likely to respond positively to an invitation after the shock of Harry‘s father’s cancer diagnosis and Kate’s cancer diagnosis. It’s one of those situations where good might just come out of bad.”

The comments come ahead of Harry’s planned return to the UK next month as he visits London to celebrate 10 years of the Invictus Games. Harry is set to speak at 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games special service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London on May 8.

It’s not been confirmed whether Meghan will join Harry or whether he will make the trip alone, leaving Meghan in California with their two children Archie and Lilibet. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from royal life in 2020 and have now settled in Montecito, California and it seems unlikely they will ever fully return. Meghan is also thought to be less than keen to visit the UK, whilst her husband Harry has made a handful of trips since they stepped back from royal duties four years ago.
