An NFL writer is predicting that the New York Jets will land a longtime Dallas Cowboys star and future Hall of Famer in free agency.
The Jets are expected to be awfully busy this offseason as they try to build a Super Bowl team around Rodgers, who missed all but a few minutes of the 2023 season recovering from a torn Achilles.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport predicted that Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith will land a one-year deal worth a fully guaranteed $12 million in free agency. Davenport also made the case for the Jets to sign the future Canton member:
“The New York Jets don’t have much cap space at present, but like most teams they will spend the next few weeks freeing some up. Once they do, the No. 1 priority has to be bolstering an offensive line that was hit hard by injuries last year and that Pro Football Network ranked in the NFL’s bottom five last season.
The window for this Jets team isn’t going to stay open that long. And given that these Jets are firmly living in the now, signing a veteran like Smith makes sense—even if his missed time in each of the past eight seasons adds a measure of risk to the deal.”
The Jets curiously neglected the obvious need to upgrade the offensive line last year. Rodgers was under duress early and often in the Jets’ season opener against the Buffalo Bills, before suffering the Achilles tear after taking a sack from Leonard Floyd.
Smith is one of the best offensive linemen of his generation, with eight Pro Bowl nods, two First-team and three Second-team All-Pro nods on his resume.
But he also turned 33 years of age in December and has been limited to 30 games over the last four years. So Smith undoubtedly comes with some risk, but if he’s healthy, he’ll promise to make an immediate impact.
