Cameras caught a mic’d up San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle making a hilarious — albeit costly — mistake in the first quarter of Sunday’s Super bowl 58 tilt against the Kansas City Chiefs.

McCaffrey fumbled in Kansas City territory on the game’s opening drive. Considering that the 49ers wound up losing in overtime, McCaffrey’s brutal fumble proved costly as it cost San Francisco potentially three points.

 

New footage shows San Francisco’s star tight end making a terrible mistake on the play where McCaffrey fumbled. Believing the play was over, Kittle said, “Hey George” to Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis.

A heads-up Karlaftis kept his eye on the ball and got a quick jump on it, beating out Kittle to recovery the loose football:

And that, folks, is why they always say to keep playing until you hear a whistle.

Kittle himself had a quiet day, finishing with only two receptions for four yards. McCaffrey was the 49ers’ most productive player, tallying 80 rushing yards and as many receiving yards (on eight receptions) with one TD reception.

The 49ers kicked a go-ahead field goal on the opening drive of overtime, but the Chiefs walked it off when Patrick Mahomes threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman.
