Meghan Markle feels there is ‘no way back’ for her and sister-in-law Kate Middleton after their rumoured fallouts over the years make the relationship ‘poisonous’, claims a royal expert

The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle’s longstanding feud with her sister-in-law the Princess of Wales stems from Meghan feeling Kate should ‘have backed her’, according to a royal expert.

The two women, who were at one point close and regularly pictured together as part of the Fab Four alongside their husbands Prince Harry and Prince William, have been estranged in recent years. After Meghan and Harry stepped back from the royal family in 2020 and gave controversial comments and interviews as part of their Netflix series and sit down with Oprah Winfrey, it became clear the relationship between the Princess of Wales and the former Suits actress wasn’t well.

Royal expert and author Tom Quinn exclusively tells The Mirror : “Megan doesn’t feel guilty about Kate, because she feels that Kate should’ve been the one person in the Royal family to back her against every difficulty. Apart from anything else, Meghan knew Kate was an outsider, so she just couldn’t understand why Kate always towed the Royal line rather than supporting her, Meghan, the other outsider.”

Yet in light of Kate’s announcement last month that she has been diagnosed with cancer after undergoing abdominal surgery in January, Meghan is thought to have been rocked by the news but “can see no way back”. Tom continued: “Kate’s cancer diagnosis has been a real shock for Meghan, but she can see no way to patch up the relationship simply because it has become so poisonous. She also doesn’t want people saying that she is trying to make things up with Kate just because Kate is ill. Meghan still feels Kate was in the wrong and should apologise before they try to build bridges.”

Harry and Meghan were reportedly kept in the dark about Kate’s health and only found out about their sister-in-law’s diagnosis when the rest of the world did. In the wake of the news that the Princess of Wales has cancer and is undergoing treatment, Meghan and Harry released an official statement which read: “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.”

Tom also added that Harry is “torn” as he’s been forced to side with his wife or support his sister-in-law as the royal rift gets worse: “He really misses that warm, uncomplicated relationship, and he is torn between loyalty to his wife and regret about the loss of the woman he was so close to. Losing Kate was Harry’s second great loss after losing his mother.”

Kate’s relationship with both Harry and Meghan was said to have been impacted by Harry’s 2023 autobiography ‘Spare’ where in one entry, Harry revealed personal text messages exchanged between Meghan and Kate amid the disagreement over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress. According to Harry, Princess Kate messaged Meghan to complain that Charlotte’s dress did not fit correctly. According to the book, Kate wrote: “Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried when she tried it on a home.”

After an exchange back and forth where Meghan pointed out there was a tailor on standby to alter dresses for the bridesmaids, Kate’s cool response left the future Duchess of Sussex upset and Meghan was reportedly left “sobbing on the floor”.
