Nigeria’s First Lady has taken aim at Meghan Markle’s dress sense in a speech after her visit to the West African country with her husband, Prince Harry.

In a brutal seven-word swipe, First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu said: “We don’t accept nakedness in our culture.”

The First Lady spoke at an event titled ‘Celebrating the Woman’ and it was engagement to mark President Bola Tinubu’s one year in office to recognise how women have made significant contributions to all spheres of life.

She emphasised how Nigerian women are at risk of losing their identity if necessary steps are not taken. As reported in Newsweek, she added: “They are all beautiful girls but they should be confident to know they are. They don’t want to be like…even they are mimicking and trying to emulate film stars from America.”

She added: “They don’t know where they come from. Why did Meghan come here looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with. We know who we are and don’t lose who you are.”

The video, circulating on social media platform X, has had over 960,000 views, and gained over 4,200 likes. The video was titled ‘When the First Lady of Nigeria puts your name, nakedness and ignorance about your identity in the same sentence… Ouch!!!’.

Supporters of Meghan Markle, however, have been quick to support the Duchess. One wrote: “The First Lady of Nigeria tells Nigerian women to not lose sight of their culture, it’s the reason why Thee Duchess Meghan visited Nigeria.”

One Meghan critic wrote: “All I heard is ‘Nigeria is a decent cultured nation & their daughters need better role models who don’t come dressed nakedly like the likes of Meghan.”

Another said: “Meghan Markle managed to create an international incident! We warned her about the clothes.”

Ultimately, the First Lady of Nigeria made no direct comment on Meghan’s tour outfits, though she did take a swipe at the Met Gala, which often sees celebrities dressed in revealing clothing.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited Nigeria for three days earlier this month to champion mental health initiatives for soldiers and empower young people as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

After meeting the official, Christopher Musa, at the Nigerian Defence Headquarters, Meghan signed a guest book thanking officials for “welcoming me home”.

Meghan’s wardrobe for the visit is estimated to have cost around £120,000 ranging from a peach backless dress by Heidi Merrick to a strappy printed dress by Johanna Ortiz.

Their trip was viewed positively by critics in general, with many royal watchers calling it a success, whilst others dubbed it an “unofficial royal tour”.
