The news that Bronny James is entering the transfer portal has rocked the basketball world. Many anticipated that the oldest son of NBA living legend LeBron James would quickly find his way to the Association, just like LeBron himself in 2003 — but Bronny‘s path is proving a bit more complicated in the age of NIL and much easier transfers between schools.
It is no secret that LeBron has long wished to play with Bronny in the NBA. The league’s all-time top scorer has stated on many occasions that he will not retire until he has the chance to play with his son — even though he has acknowledged that time is running out on his career. As such, many were wondering what the King had to say about Bronny’s choice following the Lakers‘ Tuesday night victory over the Toronto Raptors.
LeBron James reacts seriously to rumors surrounding his son Bronny at USC
LeBron pledges support to his son
Speaking to reporters from the Los Angeles locker room, LeBron rather sternly addressed the reports that Bronny would seek a new university to attend for the 2024/25 school year.
“Bronny is his own man, and he has some tough decisions to make,” LeBron said. “As his family, we’re going to support whatever he does.”LeBron this season has vociferously defended Bronny following the 19-year-old’s difficult campaign with the USC Trojans, in which he started only six games under head coach Andy Enfield. But LeBron admitted that he “didn’t know where” Bronny’s decision to transfer came from, and it will obviously further delay the 39-year-old’s ambition to play in the NBA with his son.
That said, LeBron continues to produce at a high level in his 21st NBA season. The 20-time All-Star scored 23 points and provided nine assists in 29 minutes as the Lakers defeated the Raptors 128-111 to improve to 43-33 on the season. As LeBron continues to buck aging trends and avoid Father Time, it stands to reason that he could remain a viable NBA player long enough to play with Bronny — wherever the younger James’ college career takes him.
Bronny is likely to take his time deciding where to play next. His father’s influence could see him land at Ohio State, and many other programs are expected to jostle for the 6’4” guard’s services as he enters his sophomore season in the NCAA.
