The Dallas Cowboys have been floated as the ideal landing spot for one of the NFL’s most explosive offensive playmakers.
Owner Jerry Jones and company have several tough decisions to make this offseason. Do they extend Dak Prescott? Do pending free agents in RB Tony Pollard and OT Tyron Smith stay, or do they go?
If Pollard leaves, the Cowboys will need to find a suitable replacement for the man who’s coming off a second straight 1,000-yard season. Could a recent and former rushing champion come in as Pollard’s replacement?
ESPN’s Matt Bowen analyzed the best fit for the top 50 free agents of 2024. On this list, Bowen proposed the idea of the Cowboys pursuing Las Vegas Raiders superstar Josh Jacobs to replace Pollard:
“With the expectation Tony Pollard does not return to Dallas, the Cowboys could pivot to Jacobs. He has been a volume grinder for the Raiders, with the low pad level to finish runs and the quickness to make defenders miss. Jacobs, who led the NFL in rushing in 2022, could also be utilized as a receiving option for Dak Prescott on swings, screens and unders.”
Despite leading the NFL in rushing (1,653) during the 2022 season, Jacobs and the Raiders were unable to reach an agreement on a new deal last offseason, and he ultimately agreed to a one-year deal with a max value of $12 million.
Jacobs missed four games in 2023 but still tallied 805 rushing yards and six touchdowns. And for the fifth straight year, he finished with over 1,000 yards of offense.
At just 26 years of age, Jacobs would be an ideal target for the Cowboys on a multi-year deal. Playing behind one of football’s best offensive lines, a healthy Jacobs would easily rush for over 1,000 yards in Dallas.
