The Cleveland Browns have bolstered their quarterback room by signing a former Pro Bowler to the depth chart.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns have signed former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley to a one-year contract. His arrival comes days after the team signed former first overall pick Jameis Winston to a one-year deal.
The Browns used five different quarterbacks in 2023 due to a season-ending shoulder injury to starter Deshaun Watson. Along with Watson, they also used Dorian Thompson-Robinson, P.J. Walker, Joe Flacco and Jeff Driskel.
Flacco won four of his five regular season starts en route to Comeback Player of the Year honors, leading the Cleveland Browns back to the playoffs with an 11-6 record. The Super Bowl 47 MVP, however, left to sign with the Indianapolis Colts in free agency.
With Huntley now on the roster, the Browns have the former Pro Bowler plus Winston and Thompson-Robinson as insurance options behind the injury-prone Watson.
The Ravens decided there was ultimately no need to retain Huntley with Malik Cunningham and veteran Josh Johnson already on the roster.
Tyler Huntley’s Career Statistics
The former Utah and new Cleveland Browns quarterback star only attempted five total passes in his rookie 2020 season, but he saw ample playing time in 2021 after an injury to Lamar Jackson.
That year, Huntley completed 64.9 percent of pass attempts for 1,081 yards and three touchdowns against four interceptions. He also posted 294 rushing yards on 47 carries and picked up two rushing scores.
Huntley finished 2022 as the Ravens’ starter because of another injury to Jackson. He went 2-2-0 as a starter and completed 67.0 percent of pass attempts for 658 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions to go along with 137 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Huntley earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2022 and helped the Ravens sneak into the postseason. They were oh-so-close to upsetting Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals in the Wild Card Round, but wound up losing a heartbreaker 24-17.
