The San Francisco 49ers have released a veteran defensive back from their roster in a cap-saving move, less than two weeks after their Super Bowl 58 loss.

On Friday, the 49ers announced that they have released cornerback Isaiah Oliver. The former Atlanta Falcons’ second-round pick (58th overall in 2018) signed a two-year with the 49ers last offseason following a five-year run with the NFC South club.

The 49ers clear $2.4 million in cap space with the move, sending Oliver to free agency for the second consecutive year. The 2024 NFL free agent market will open doors at 4:00 p.m. EST on March 13.

Oliver appeared in each of the 49ers’ 17 regular season games, though he was only designated as a starter for six of them. Oliver had one interception, two pass defenses and a career-high 67 combined tackles.

After losing Super Bowl 58 to the Kansas City Chiefs, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan fired Steve Wilks in a surprise move. Shanahan has yet to announce a replacement, with former New England Patriots Bill Belichick being widely suggested as a possible target.

For his career, the former Colorado star has three interceptions, 36 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, two sacks and 270 combined tackles in 79 regular season games.
