The Los Angeles Rams have released a key part of their Super bowl 56 championship team in a cap-saving move.
On Wednesday, the Rams announced on X/Twitter that they have released center Brian Allen. The team bid Allen farewell with a heartwarming “thank you” message.
The 28-year-old was a fourth-round draft pick (111th overall) by the Rams back in 2018. After helping the Rams to a Super Bowl 56 championship in the 2022 season, he was rewarded with a $24 million extension over three years.
In releasing Allen, the Rams save $4.9 million in cap space. Given GM Les Snead’s excellent track record of finding quality offensive linemen in the later rounds of the draft, it made total sense to release Allen and clear up extra cash.
Fellow offensive lineman Joe Noteboom, also part of the Super Bowl 56 championship team, is another prime release candidate to keep an eye on. If the Rams were to cut him post-June 1st, it would open up an additional $15 million in salary cap space.
Allen appeared in 50 games during his six-year tenure with the Rams, making 32 starts. Knee and thumb injuries limited him to five total game appearances in 2023, opening the door for Coleman Shelton to emerge as the Rams’ new starting center.
The Rams finished 10-7 in 2023 and qualified for the postseason for the third time in four years, falling to the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card Round.
