The Houston Texans have made a surprise adjustment to the contract of Stefon Diggs, one day after acquiring him from the Buffalo Bills in a blockbuster trade.
On Wednesday, the Texans landed Stefon Diggs and two late-round picks from the Bills in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick. The 30-year-old had been the subject of trade rumors for a while, and the Bills ultimately decided it was time to move on from the four-time Pro Bowler.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Texans have taken out the last three years of Diggs’ contract, meaning he’s now eligible to hit free agency next offseason. The deal restructure also gives Diggs a bump in pay for 2024:
“As part of their blockbuster trade to acquire wide receiver Stefon Diggs, the Houston Texans wiped out the final three years on his contract, giving him the ability to become a free agent after this season…
The Texans also took the $3.5 million guaranteed to Diggs next season and moved up into this season, giving him a raise and assuring him of $22.52 million in guaranteed money in 2024.”
Back in the 2022 offseason, the Bills handed Diggs a four-year contract extension worth $104 million. With that deal, Diggs was initially slated to remain under contract through the 2027 NFL season.

Diggs exceeded 100 receptions and 1,100 receiving yards in each of his four seasons with the Bills, helping the club to four straight AFC East division crowns and a trip to the 2020 AFC Championship Game.
In his final year with Buffalo, Stefon Diggs caught 107 passes for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns.
Stefon Diggs Needed A New Team
As great as Stefon Diggs was in Buffalo, it was evident for a while that his relationship with the organization had run its course. The Bills tried to play nice with Diggs in the hopes of winning a Super Bowl together, but the club’s latest postseason meltdown in January was simply the writing on the wall.
The Bills had to retool their roster, while Diggs needed to go somewhere that would make him happy. He now gets the chance to win a Super Bowl on an up-and-coming Houston team led by young stars CJ Stroud, Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Will Anderson Jr. and Derek Stingley Jr.
