The list of big-name free-agent safeties continues to grow as the Denver Broncos have opted to release Justin Simmons on the back of an eight-year stay with the team, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Simmons, a four-time second-team All-Pro and a two-time Pro Bowler, would have accounted for $18.25 million against the Broncos’ cap but will now be heading into free agency with the new league year set to begin next week.
Drafted in the third round in 2016, the 30-year-old spent his entire eight-year career in Denver, playing 118 games. He’s built a reputation as one of the best safeties in the league and has registered at least two interceptions every season – he made a league-leading six in 2022.
He recorded three INTs. eight pass breakups, and two forced fumbles in 2023.
Simmons has enjoyed a healthy metier in the pros and his 30 interceptions since his rookie season count for the most in the NFL since 2016.
