EXCLUSIVE: The Royal Family cannot stop Harry and Meghan from visiting foreign nations, but there is a way for them to step in, it’s being said.
The Royal Family can’t stop Prince Harry and Meghan from doing more overseas tours – but they can interfere, according to one expert.
Harry and Meghan flew to Nigeria for three days earlier this month, promoting the Invictus Games, but they also visited a school and inspected a military parade in scenes reminiscent of a full royal overseas tour.
They are banned from official engagements after walking away from royal duties in 2020 to pursue a life overseas in the USA. The pair have gone onto earn millions from private ventures, including Harry’s autobiography Spare and their Netflix series.
Tom Sykes, royal editor for The Daily Beast, told The Express: “Everywhere they went in Nigeria they were greeted as royalty.”
Harry and Meghan were in Nigeria for three days, which looked like a state visit
He added: “The royals can’t stop them doing more tours, but the government might seek to apply serious diplomatic pressure on friendly states not to host these quasi-royal tours.”
Harry and Meghan were invited to Nigeria by Christopher Muse, Chief of Defence Staff of the western African nation. The visit was meant to promote the Invictus Games with Nigeria considering hosting the sporting event down the road.
By the end of the trip, it was looking a little more celebrity than royal
Critics have claimed Harry and Meghan’s overseas visits are intended to promote their personal initiatives.
Mr Sykes believes such overseas visits are not going to stop with Nigeria – and there are more royal-like tours to come.
He said: “Harry and Meghan are effectively declaring that they will continue to leverage their royal status.”
