Patrick Mahomes‘ grandfather Randy has died at the age of 78, the Chiefs quarterback’s mother has announced.

Last month it was revealed that Mahomes’ grandfather had been moved into hospice care just over 48 hours before he secured his place in a third straight Super Bowl.

Yet five days after Kansas City’s crushing defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles, Patrick’s mom has announced that Randy has now passed away.

‘Hard to find the words of holding my fathers hand as he goes to Heaven,’ Randi Mahomes wrote alongside a series of photos of her father.

‘I know he’s in a better place. I love you daddy. Well done, good and faithful servant’.

Randi had repeatedly spoke on social media about her dad and his ill health but never revealed precisely what problem he was suffering from before his passing. Randy turned 78 on January 6.

Mahomes’ mom took to Instagram over the holidays and asked for prayers for her father, having previously shared a picture of herself watching Patrick and the Chiefs play from her dad’s hospital bed back in September.

‘Prayer warriors please pray for my daddy,’ she wrote on September 13 as Kansas City played the Los Angeles Chargers. ‘He is in the hospital and is not well.’

Randi also shared a picture of her father out of hospital on Thanksgiving and said she was thrilled to be celebrating with him.

Patrick has endured a difficult week after his nightmare performance in Sunday’s Super Bowl defeat to the Eagles.

The three-time champion fell way below his usual standards after being sacked six times and throwing two costly interceptions, including a pick six.

Rival quarterback Jalen Hurts stole the show on the night to seal a 40-22 victory for Philadelphia, with Kansas City’s dreams of a historic three-peat coming crashing down at the very final hurdle.

Mahomes was quick to shoulder the blame after the defeat on Sunday, writing to Chiefs fans in a post on X: ‘I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it.’

He also added in his postgame press conference: ‘I can’t turn the ball over when it’s not going our way. I have to learn from that and get better from that.

‘Anytime you lose the Super Bowl, it’s the worst feeling. It’ll stick with you for the rest of your career. It hurt more than the wins feel good. It’s going to hurt for a while, but how can you respond to it.’

Despite her father being moved into hospice care Randi was still in attendance at both the Super Bowl in New Orleans and last month’s AFC Championship game in Kansas City to cheer on Patrick.

After last month’s win over the Buffalo Bills, the quarterback was quick to come together with his family on the field at Arrowhead Stadium.

In an emotional family moment, he posed with mom Randi, wife Brittany – just days after she gave birth to their third child – dad Patrick Snr, brother Jackson and half-sister Mia.
